MOE
For 9 years, I’ve been digesting all the symbolism of the DMV—especially Washington, DC. My experience can be summed as one full of intrigued laughter and blissful pride. It’s been a thing of beauty just like the capitol of the world. My world. I spent so many of my years here leaving to regurgitate all of the information I consumed. The Arkansas portion of my family had to know about the 990’s, metro, mumbo sauce, go-go music and the word “Moe”.
Moe is the emblematic term of endearment that has flowed through DC like the Potomac. It feels like a warm hug. You can hear the word being yelled all over the city during day or night, and it’s power never depletes no matter the candidness of the delivery. Although, such a word isn’t the absolute representation of a place, it feels that way. It breathes new life. Rather than explaining Moe, I thought expressing my gratitude for it would be more fitting. I’m thankful for all the stories DC has given me. I’m thankful for the word Moe.
moejito
ingredients:
2oz. mint simple syrup
1c sugar + 1 1/4c water + sprig of mint
1/2oz. lime juice, fresh (preferred)
2oz. white rum (I used Diplomatico)
2-3 mint leaves
club soda, top off
optional: sprig of mint + sliced limes for garnish
Helpful items:
cocktail shaker
measuring jigger
cocktail muddler
small whisk
recipe:
In a small pot, pour in sugar and set to medium-low. Allow sugar to slowly cook for 4-5 minutes then immediately add water. Continually whisk until sugar has fully dissolved in water. Add mint sprig into pot ensuring it is submerged as possible. Set pot away from heat and allow to cool for 30-35 minutes.
After simple syrup has cooled, place mint leaves and mint simple syrup into cocktail shaker. Muddle the leaves.
Add lime juice/white rum with jigger and ice to cocktail shaker. Shake well!
Pour mixture into cup of choice and top off (fill rest of cup) with club soda. Garnish with sprig of mint and sliced limes. Enjoy!
